Product Information
What is Raw Honey?
Raw honey means that we only pour our honey through a strainer to take out the large bits of wax and poor bees that fell in. We do not put our honey through any other filters. We keep our honey unfiltered because this keeps bits of pollen and propolis in our honey. Both propolis and pollen have powerful health benefits.
Our honey is also unpasteurized, which means that we do not heat up our honey. Heating up our honey kills off any of the nutritional benefits that raw honey provides. This means our honey keeps its natural mineral and vitamin content.

Why does our honey get harder?
This is called crystallization. All natural raw honey crystallizes. This is the main way to tell if you have pure honey.
What is a luminary and how does it work?
A luminary is essentially a lantern made of beeswax. In order to glow, you will need to fill 1" of the bottom with sand or small pebbles. Then place a tea light candle securely in the middle of the sand and light it. This will create a warm amber glow and fill the air with the purifying sweet scent of beeswax. Luminaries are great decor for weddings, romantic settings, holidays and make unique centrepieces to light up any dining experience.
What are the benefits of beeswax candles?
- Whenever you light a beeswax candle it releases negative ions into the air. These negative ions cleanse the air from allergens, mold and odours, all of which carry a positive charge. This positive charge leaves them suspended in the air we breathe. When you add negative ions to the air, by burning a beeswax candle, you are neutralizing the positive ions which are either sucked back into the burning candle or simply fall to the ground. Beeswax candles have shown positive effects in people suffering from allergies, asthma and generally improve air quality for all.
- Beeswax is slow burning, giving your candle a longer life.
- Emits a sweet honey aroma into the air, well known to assist with relaxation and meditation practices.
- Is non drip when used properly making them safer and cleaner to burn.
- Beeswax candles have the brightest and purest light of all candles. This means they are closest to natural sunlight, which can minimize eye strain and headaches.
Buyers, BEEware!
At Big Hill Homestead we only make candles out of 100% beeswax. You can trust that no other additives or mysterious surprises go into our candles or beeswax products. Our promise is to provide all natural products straight from the bees.
Did you know that if a beeswax candle is labelled "pure beeswax", it only needs to contain 51% beeswax and the rest is usually paraffin wax. Paraffin wax candles are known for their toxic effects. For authentic, purifying, non toxic beeswax candles the label will read "100% beeswax". Buyers may also notice that "100% beeswax" candles are a bit more expensive. With all the benefits listed above and the time and energy put in by us beekeepers and our honeybees, you'll surely see this as a great investment in your home's air quality.
